The Hammond Police Department’s Community Affairs Division and K-9 Unit recently visited the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana to present an educational K-9 demonstration for one of the organization’s summer camp groups.
The event gave campers an up-close look at the important role police K-9 teams play in law enforcement. Officers demonstrated the training, discipline, and specialized skills that help K-9 teams assist with public safety, while also giving students the opportunity to learn more about police work in an engaging and interactive setting.
During the visit, Lt. Gonzalez praised the Challenger Learning Center and its impact on the community.
“This was my first time here, and this is an amazing facility. It’s truly a hidden gem in our community,” said Lt. Gonzalez.
The Hammond Police Department values opportunities like this to connect with local youth, answer questions, and build positive relationships outside of emergency situations. Community outreach programs help foster trust, encourage meaningful conversations, and inspire the next generation through educational experiences.
The department extends its sincere thanks to the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana for hosting the event and providing students with an opportunity to learn more about law enforcement and the important work performed by the Hammond Police Department’s K-9 Unit.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with organizations throughout the community to educate, engage, and serve the residents of Hammond.
